Sydfynske hav
Theme: Holocene coastal development Locality: Archipelago south of Funen Description of a Danish GeoSite
Primary identification
1. GeoSite no.:
GS - 5-2.
2. National locality no.:
NGI - 128.
3. GeoSite name:
Sydfynske hav.
4. Location:
Denmark; South of Funen.
5. Co-ordinates UTM:
System ED50 Zone 32, x=577312, y=6092099.
6. Type of locality:
Archipelago.
Primary geological features
7. Main topic:
Erosional and depositional coastal forms.
8. Geo(morpho)logy:
Transgressed Weichselian glacial landscape, the tilly culmination points of which are now the cores of islands, the different exposures of which are actively swept by winds and waves. This, together with the variable sediment budget, produces ever changing coastal cliffs and islets with littoral meadows, associated beach ridges and reefs, barrier beaches, spits (straight as well as curved), tombolos, foreland ridges at right angle to the coast, and coves.
There are flooded forests (stumps) and submarine remains of human settlements the Stone Age (Maglemose culture) at 2 - 3 metres depth. From here precise dendrochronological datings and historic environmental evaluations have been achieved.
9. Frame / context:
Geomorphology and Sedimentology.
10. Chronostratigraphy:
Late Pleistocene to Holocene.
11. Primary value:
Transgressed glacial landscape.
12. Comparative evaluation:
The shallow sea South of Funen is one amongst more transgressed archipelagoes within Denmark. Other archipelagoes are located North of Funen, South of Zealand, and West of Southern Jutland (Watten Sea). The archipelago South of Funen has the greatest variability in erosional and accumulational formes in an area, which is hardly affected by tides, and indeed the greatest number of islands.
Supplementary locality: The ajoining area in Storeblt.
13. Comparable GeoSites:
In Denmark: Other archipelagoes are located West of Southern Jutland (Watten Sea, GS - 5-3). Similar areas exist North of Funen, and South of Zealand.

17. Subordinate geological interests:
Climatic evolution.
18. "Non"-geo interests:
Raw materials, Archeological sites, Biological studies, and cultural history, which are all in an interplay with geological processes and landscapes.
Tourism.
